ABSTRACT

Retrospective file review examining ECT utilisation before and after commencement of the Mental Health Act 2014 (Victoria). Collaborative study involving the ECT director and nursing team, examining both clinical and legislative dimensions of ECT governance in a metropolitan service.

KEY FINDINGS

• Reduction in ECT use per 1,000 admissions following MHA 2014 implementation

• Consistent with the Act's intent: promoting least restrictive treatment and supported decision making

• Mental Health Tribunal found to be functioning effectively in reviewing ECT requests for involuntary patients

Independently replicated by Eastern Health in a subsequent study (2020)
