Hepatitis B and C screening in psychiatric inpatient settings: a nested analysis within the MHDHEP retrospective cohort

ABSTRACT

Nested analysis within the retrospective arm of MHDHEP examining rates of missed HBV and HCV testing under a risk-based screening approach. Systematic sampling design: 200 patients drawn from 1,208 total admissions by selecting every fifth patient.

N = 200 sampled · HBV / HCV · Risk-based screening

RESEARCH AIMS

  • Determine rate of missed bloodborne virus testing under standard risk-based protocols

  • Evaluate whether universal screening is warranted over targeted risk-factor screening

  • Support Commonwealth-funded decentralisation of HCV care into mental health settings

  • Generate data to support a Delphi consensus statement on HCV screening in inpatient psychiatry
